About Sunny McMurtrey
I was born in Fort Worth, Texas. Got my first pair of cowgirl boots when I was three years old. That’s also when Daddy started taking me to rodeos. I wanted to be a barrel racer.
Well, I didn’t end up barrel racing, but I have ridden in a few “career rodeos.” I’m an Emmy-nominated entertainment and news producer and interviewer. Also, a private investigator and public speaking coach. Two of my former bosses are Barbara Walters and Dr. Phil McGraw. Producing interviews for them, I came to realize there is something important to be learned from everyone you meet. Each of us has a story to tell, whether they play Hail to the Chief when you walk into a room; you’re reviled by many, like Saddam Hussein; can turn heads and bedazzle legions of admirers as Princess Diana did; or you’re someone who’s not a household name, but you’re an “inspirer” to the rest of us because of your extraordinary grit in taking on one of the endless Goliath-sized problems we all face in life.
I can’t lay claim to having any hobbies, although recently I’ve taken up learning to play the Native American flute. The haunting, airy sound appeals to my desire to soar in the open spaces out West. And I am an activist for adopting older pets, of which I’ve had several. My latest is Lucy, a 16-year-old British Bombay cat (known as the black panther’s ‘mini-me’) whose owner wanted her to find other digs when she turned 15.
My biggest thrill is interviewing and writing about the compelling moments in the lives of people I meet and see around me. As author Mitch Albom writes in his book For One More Day, “You can find something truly important in an ordinary minute.” Each of our lives is filled with ordinary minutes that tell important stories about who we are and the world we live in. I’ve loved sharing the moments I’ve seen in the world around me in Stories from a Global Cowgirl—“Don’t Put a Cat on Your Head!”.
As to why I call myself a Global Cowgirl— because I’ve traveled and worked in places that little three-year-old cowgirl never imagined her boots would take her, including Cuba, Egypt, Iraq and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Oman, Jordan, Romania, Bulgaria, East Berlin before the Wall came down, and almost every state in the Union. I have called Manhattan, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and London home. Never wanting to be fenced in, I hope to call a few more cities home one day. For now, I live near Buckeystown, Maryland, where I’m working on my next book and my Global Cowgirl Ventures.
